Postdoctoral Associate position available at Dr. Paul Seli's Mind at Large Lab

Dr. Paul Seli's Mind at Large Lab at Duke University seeks one or two Postdoctoral Associates to begin as soon as possible (summer or fall 2019 at the latest), for two or more years. Postdocs will design and run research studies, analyze data, prepare publications, and be a core member of the lab's intellectual community. We are seeking highly motivated candidates who have experience with lab/online experiments and who are interested in (a) mind wandering and inattention, (b) media multitasking, (c) hypnagogia and lucid dreaming, and/or (d) creativity. Computational skills (e.g. web programming, Python, MATLAB) are a plus.

Broadly, our lab is interested in identifying methods with which to optimize human cognitive processing. For example, we are conducting research examining the possibility that the ubiquitous experience of mind wandering can, at times, serve beneficial functions (e.g., that it can facilitate creativity, the generation of "ah ha" moments, and aid in problem-solving). We are also interested in how we might leverage hypnagogic states to promote creativity, well-being, and, more generally, to allow people to increase productivity/functioning in their daily lives.

Our research combines behavioral experiments in the lab and in the field. We are particularly interested in conducting ecologically valid studies so that we can more directly apply our research findings to real-world situations. Our group draws on approaches from psychology, economics, biology, sociology, and philosophy, and our lab culture aims to advance our understanding of ways to enhance human potential by fostering open discussion and debate, and by rewarding originality and vision.

Ideal candidates will be intrinsically motivated, creative, independent, articulate, and deeply engaged in their research. Funds for conducting experiments will be available to the fellow, as will the many opportunities for collaboration afforded by the Duke community. (There are also significant opportunities for collaboration with leading researchers, from institutions around the world, who collaborate with Dr. Seli.) Postdocs will also have the opportunity to help mentor undergraduate and graduate students in the lab.

Individuals with a Ph.D., or those expecting to complete their Ph.D. in spring 2019, are encouraged to apply. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. If you are interested, please apply - no need to email inquiring as to whether the position is still available!

We welcome and encourage you to apply even if you do not think you might meet all the specified qualifications above. We function as a highly collaborative team, and so we work with each other's strengths and weaknesses.

Please send your CV, a statement of interest (two pages, max), two papers (published or unpublished), and arrange to have at least two reference emails sent to: Paul Seli at
