JOB DESCRIPTION

KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm has grown to become one of Europe’s leading technical and engineering universities, as well as a key centre of intellectual talent and innovation. We are Sweden’s largest technical research and learning institution and home to students, researchers and faculty from around the world. Our research and education covers a wide area including natural sciences and all branches of engineering, as well as architecture, industrial management, urban planning, history and philosophy.

The School of Engineering Sciences and the Department of Mechanics is offering a postdoctoral position in Human Movement Biomechanics, with a focus on balance and sensorimotor performance in persons with a motor disability.

Job description

The project will be carried out in cooperation with the Department of Women’s and Children’s Health at Karolinska Institutet. The aim of the project is to create a framework that subjects a biomechanical model to an optimizer in order to predict movement patterns in individuals with motor disorders, based on that individual’s strengths, range of motion, pain, sensory ability, etc. We aim to create models that well represent individuals, and to study in depth the optimization problem involved when the central nervous system governs postural strategy.

Your areas of responsibility will be work together with an engineer or mathematician and to collect quantifiable data through evaluations of motor and sensory ability in patients with motor disability, to measure motor performance, and to detect possibly new associations. Further areas of responsibility are to report findings in highly ranked peer-reviewed journals and at scientific conferences.

Qualifications

We seek a candidate with a doctoral degree (PhD), completed in the last three years, in biomechanics, neurology, physical therapy, or other appropriate background for this research area, preferably with a specialization in motor control or balance. Particularly advantageous merits for this position include documented experience in research and experimentation on human subjects, preferably patients with motor disability.

Applicants must be strongly motivated for this research area. This position requires ability to work both independently and in a multidisciplinary team. Applicants should thus have a good level of cooperative and communicative abilities, as well as a good ability to write scientific reports in English and communicate with patients in Swedish.

Great emphasis will be placed on personal competence and suitability.
