The European Joint Programme on Radioactive Waste Management (EURAD) is dedicated to further improve the scientific basis for safe storage of energy waste products in the geological subsurface in the future. More than 50 European research institutions are contributing to the EURAD project in the next five years from 2019-2024. The Joint Programme will generate and manage knowledge to support EU Member States with their implementation of the Directive 2011/70/Euratom (Waste Directive), taking into account the different magnitudes and stages of advancement of member state National Programmes. The UFZ is involved in the projects ACED, DONUT, and GAS.

The UFZ’s activities will be also linked to the national research initiative “Integrity of nuclear waste repository systems – Cross-scale system understanding and analysis” (iCROSS) UFZ’s activities within this joint initiative are focussed on model and scientific software development for the analysis of nuclear waste repository systems across scales. As part of this initiative, the UFZ is a partner of the Mt. Terri underground research laboratory.

To strengthen the existing expertise in modelling of thermo-hydro-mechanical/chemical (THM/C) coupled processes in fractured porous media at the Department Environmental Informatics of the UFZ in order to establish a leading position in the field of coupled process simulations for applications in deep geological storage systems, we offer the following vacancy at the earliest possible date:

PostDoc/PhD positions (m/f/x)Subject: Modelling of Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical Processes in Engineered Barrier Systems and Clay Rocks/Fracture Mechanics

PostDoc positions: 100 % working time (39 h/week, limited for up to 4 years)
PhD positions: 65 % working time (25,35 h/week, limited for 36 months)

Your tasks:

We offer PostDoc and PhD positions to perform research on computational methods for coupled thermal, hydraulic and mechanical (THM) processes in engineered barrier systems composed of bentonite materials and in clay rock. The objective is to devise, implement, verify and apply coupled process and constitutive models for the simulation of heater experiments performed in various European underground research laboratories and in the underground research laboratory Mt. Terri (Switzerland).

We offer also PostDoc and PhD positions to perform research on computational methods for fracture mechanics in porous media (Phase-Field Models and/or Damage Mechanics) under high-temperature and high-pressure environment (thermo-hydro-mechanical couplings) and an opportunity to earn a doctorate degree simultaneously: The proposed methods and models will be integrated into the open-source Finite Element platform OpenGeoSys. The candidates will devise test cases against the implementation of the numerical methodologies and validate the numerical models against experimental data obtained from laboratory experiments and in-situ data. The candidate will be responsible for project deliverables and milestones according to the funding source requirements.

Your profile:

  • The suitable candidate must possess a diploma or master degree in applied sciences (preferably Geophysics, Mechanical/Civil Engineering, Applied or Theoretical Physics, Applied Mathematics)
  • The candidate is expected to have some familiarity with mechanics and numerical methods (particularly finite elements method) and has experience in programming (preferably in C++)
  • A scientific attitude and a strong problem-solving skills
  • Excellent academic records and proficient English language skills
  • To integrate into a team of scientists the candidate is required to have good communication skills, creative thinking and team working capabilities and the drive to produce impactful scientific research
