Food studies is an interdisciplinary field, one that encourages dialogue between anthropologists, historians, literary scholars, sociologists, and others situated in the broad humanities. This roundtable will examine ways in which food as nourishment, ritual, and symbol had negative connotations in the medieval world. It will explore how food was used to mark difference, control or subjugate others through customs and laws, and solidify structures of power. Moreover, presenters will be encouraged to make connections between “bad” food in the Middle Ages and today and discuss ways in which tastes, perceptions, and practices have continued (or not) and why.
