Food helps us form our identities and informs our relationships to the people and the world around us. As such, it has featured heavily in art, literature, music, and other cultural expression throughout history. This conference is interested in exploring the role and depiction of food in literature and other artistic media, including the importance of eating or feasting, communal meals, drinking or drinking games, food metaphors, recipes, the relationship of food and memory (individual or cultural), food and identity, and the sociopolitical implications of food abundance or scarcity.  How do the varying food cultures in our contemporary world connect to food cultures from the past?

We encourage interdisciplinary and global approaches to the field of Comparative Literature. We welcome proposals from any branch of the humanities including, but not limited to, Film and Media Studies, Anthropology, Sociology, Gender and Sexuality Studies, History, Postcolonial Studies, Eco-Criticism, Food Studies, Folklore, Religious Studies, and Art History.
