Edgar Allan Poe longed to be known as a poet. His poetry and his prose have both influenced literary traditions and popular culture on a global scale, but in the twenty-first century, far more critical conversations take place around Poe’s prose than his poetry. As one recent case in point, the 2019 Oxford Handbook of Edgar Allan Poe, edited by J. Gerald Kennedy and Scott Peeples, contains forty-five essays from a vast variety of Poe scholars. Only three of these chapters concentrate particularly on Poe’s poems while one other essay examines his influence on later poetry. In his review of the Handbook in Poe Studies, Adam Bradford notes that “this paucity hints at the fact that the poems are ripe for renewed attention” (E9). This panel seeks to be one of the starting points of this renewed attention.

Why and how do we read Poe’s poems in the twenty-first century? How do they talk to us now in ways that are similar to and different from their influence on past literary traditions? This panel hopes to offer new interpretations of Poe’s poetry, and its organizer will consider proposals about any of Poe’s poems—from the extremely popular and repeatedly anthologized works like “The Raven” or “Annabel Lee” to Poe’s well-known and lesser known poems. Proposals that historically contextualize Poe’s poems, offer comparative readings of them alongside other literary traditions, or examine their translations are also welcome.
