Speech acts, according to Searle, are the minimal units of human communication. Yet they rarely come in isolation but rather are related to the context and content of communication, and in turn change this context and content. A proper understanding of speech acts, as well as of communication, requires a close analysis of the ways how speech acts contribute to the goals of discourse, and how discourses are shaped by speech acts. In this workshop we will discuss theoretical proposals and empirical evidence that help to disentangle and clarify the nature of this relation between speech acts and discourse. In particular, we are interested in phenomena like the following:

1)  Anaphoric reference to speech acts in the current discourse
2)  Reference to speech acts and pieces of conversation in other discourses, such as direct and indirect speech reports
3)  The nature and modeling of performative vs. informative speech acts
4)  The interlocking of speech acts in dialogue, as in monitoring and response acts
5) The expression of the combination of speech acts to coherent discourses

We are particularly interested in presentations that combine an interest in the general architecture of discourse as rooted in individual speech acts, and a discussion of particular empirical phenomena. Talks that discuss phenomena in under-described languages are welcome. We aim for a workshop that combines invited talks, and papers and posters selected after a general call. We will have funds to sponsor travel costs for one graduate student whose paper is accepted.
