Thanks to the latest scientific and technological developments, we human beings are now juggling multiple types of realities: virtual reality, collaborative virtual reality, augmented reality, mixed reality, hyperreality, social reality, personal reality, alternative realities, and so forth. The array, complexity, and variances among these several realities are remarkable. In the face of these various realities, we struggle to preserve (and/or often interpolate) our identities from one reality to the other. Fields such as literature, history and cultural studies, inspired by Michel Foucault among others, have examined and deliberated about the dimensional and diachronic aspects of identities, as well as the construction of cultural, social, and historical identities. Meanwhile, in the fields related to technology and science, researchers have explored and analyzed synchronic and compartmentalized characteristics of identities in virtual, augmented, and mixed realities.
The 2020 AHLiST Conference invites researchers and educators to debate distinct notions of identity (and one may regard the following topics as suggestions or as starting points for reflection):
*how to reformulate existing meanings of identity and/or self-identity within history, literature, science, technology or any other academic field of study
*how to expand the current concepts of identity from a parochial (only within our own academic discipline) to interdisciplinary definition
*how to theorize new classifications of identity appropriate to the world we live in (hyper-technological, post-human, post-global, post-truth, etc.)
*how to comprehend the making of individual and collective identities at regional, national and international levels coping with past and present challenges
*how to interpret, navigate, and theorize the possibilities of virtual/digital and non-virtual identities.
Please keep in mind that it is the general theme of the conference, and each discipline of the AHLiST, such as history, literature, science and technology, will entertain additional topics that demonstrate innovative research and development relevant to each appropriate field of studies.
