At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Energy Technology one PhD stipend is available within the research project “Center of Digitalized Electronics”. The stipend is open for appointment from March 1, 2021, or soon as possible thereafter. The Department of Energy Technology is among the world leading institutions within power electronics, but the department covers most fields of Energy Technology ranging from electrical energy to thermal energy including Energy Systems, Fluid Mechanics and Combustion and Mechatronic Systems. The department has about 300 employees – of which more than 125 Ph.D. students. The laboratory-facilities are world-class and the research carried out is most often in collaboration with industry.

Job description

Electrification require power electronic converters for the conversion of electrical energy and these are continuously becoming more efficient and compact. A reason is attributed to the transition from using traditional silicon (Si) semiconductor devices to new wide band gap semiconductor materials, such as silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN). Unlocking the full potential of the new semiconductor devices, already released in the LED applications, is a demanding task for design engineers. Wide band gap semiconductors are more sensitive and their increased compactness cause difficulty in physically verifying the operation and performance of new products.

The successful candidate for the position at the “Center of Digitalized Electronics” (CoDE) research project will help to push the boundaries for power electronics design through both theoretical and experimental applied research on improvement of energy efficiency of power electronic converters, by improving the methods used for design, simulating and testing.

The research project revolves around a promising paradigm of digital design and digital product qualification methods, seeking to exploit the potential of finite-element-methods (FEM), parametrization and optimization theory within the field of power electronics design. Attaining this paradigm shift calls for qualified researchers with an interdisciplinary profile.

The research is strongly linked to the power module packaging laboratory, Department of Energy Technology, AAU ( ) .
This laboratory is dedicated to design and manufacturing of power module with an emphasis on rapid prototyping and testing. The laboratory enables access to state of the art equipment to make high quality prototypes and sub-components at high international level.

The preferred candidate for the PhD stipend holds a master degree within energy engineering, electrical engineering, physics or equivalent.
Experience or knowledge within electronics design, electromagnetic field theory, semiconductor physics or finite-element methods will be prioritized.

A high proficiency in oral and written English is required.

Application requirements (The application needs to include the following documents)
• Letter of motivation.
• Project description (proposal). A document of maximum 5 pages that describes in your view what are the important research questions (hypotheses), methodologies, and key literature that are useful specifically for this project.
• Curriculum vitae.
• Diplomas confirming academic degrees (Master + Bachelor degrees), including academic transcripts.
• List of publications (if applicable).

• Recommendation letter (if applicable).
